The original broadcast was on the TVB Jade with approximately 45-minute long episodes airing five days a week. The final two episodes were an hour and a half long each, which aired during the weekends. Song Bird is a historical drama television series produced by TVB and broadcast in Hong Kong in 1989. The story is based on the life of shidaiqu singer Zhou Xuan. The Chinese name of the TV series comes from one of the name of the song used in the 1937 film Street Angel.

Sergeant Xu Dahu broke several major cases, but his independent style led to conflicts with his supervisor, Li Pengfei, and he was transferred. Dahu resigned in frustration but was encouraged by his girlfriend, Ho Yuk-kam, to start a private detective agency.
